アリスの迷い込んだ世界はハートの女王に支配されたお祭りの国だった「東京わにデパート」展 @ 伊勢丹新宿

Tokyo Wani Department is back this time with an installation in Isetan Dept Store on the 2nd floor at the Girls’ Gallery Space (right at the top of the escalator). Many of you will be excited to hear the theme: “Alice in Matsuri-Land”. 

“Matsuri” means festival, so this is a collision of Carrol’s British dreamscape and a Japanese party. As for the Alice world we love? There’s a giant mushroom table, mirror mazes with half-painted flowers, card deck headbands and teacup “lanterns”. Then there are chocolate-covered banana and grilled corn headbands, gold fish brooches, card deck “fireworks” displays, and a giant squid for the Japanese “festival” side. 

東京わにデパートが、今度は伊勢丹の本館2F、イセタンガールギャラリーにやってきた！(本館１階の帽子売り場近くのエスカレーターを、２階に上った目の前にある開かれたスペース) テーマを聞いたらみなさんも絶対に興奮するはず！その気になるテーマは… 「おまつりの国のアリス」！

そう。これはルイスキャロルの描いた「英国風夢の風景」と、「日本のお祭り」が激しくぶつかり合う世界を表現している。私たちの大好きなアリスの世界からはというと… ？おっきなキノコのテーブル、半分花のペイントを施された鏡の迷路、トランプのヘッドドレス、そしてティーカップのランタンが登場！それからチョコレートで覆われたバナナとか焼きトウモロコシのヘッドドレス、金魚のブローチ、トランプの「花火」のディスプレイだったり。それから日本のお祭りサイドからはダイオウイカが参戦！

Tokyo Wani Department are an art duo who use mostly wicker in the creative accessories, furniture and display items they sell. “Wani” means wicker, but the way that they spell it in Japanese “katakana” kind of makes it look like “Alligator”. Well, either way it’s quite a unique name. 

I ran into them once at an industry trade show called “ROOMS” in Tokyo and was astounded at their creative headpieces, like a glazed chicken, pancakes with syrup, and an apple slice with a fork (that I wore during Tokyo Fashion Week). 

“東京わにデパート”は染色した籐(とう)を手編みする技法を中心に、クリエイティブなアクセサリーや家具、ディスプレイなどを創作することを得意とするアートユニットで、また販売も行っている。(「わに」に込められた本当の意味は「小枝細工」。カタカナで「ワニ」と綴ると、どうしても「生き物のワニ」を連想してしまうから。いずれにしてもとってもユニークな名前だと思う。) 

私は過去に一度東京で、「ROOMS」と呼ばれる業界のトレードショーで彼らと会ったことがある。そこでワニのクリエイティブなヘッドドレスを目にして驚愕した！油がのったチキンかシロップのかかったホットケーキ、それからフォークを添えたスライスされたリンゴとか。(私は東京のファッションウィークで身につけてた！)

They’re taking orders for pretty much everything on display that will be custom-made. And check out the display until Aug 8th.

 ワニはディスプレイのほとんどをオーダーメイドで受注している。それから伊勢丹での作品展の公開は8月8日までだから、ぜひチェックしてみてっ。

「おじょうさん、お面はいらんかね。」森の中でアリスが出くわしたのは、大きなキノコの上に乗った、イモムシではなく、イカでした。

“Hi young lady, do you need a mask?” said the creature in the forest atop a giant mushroom. He wasn’t a caterpillar though, instead he was a giant squid.

森を歩いてたどり着いた、３月ウサギの家の前では、「おまつりティーパーティー」が開かれていました。大きな帽子のテーブルに、ティーカップの提灯がこうこうと明るく、あんずあめや綿菓子、かき氷なんかが踊っています。時計はずっと、お茶の時間の６時をさしているので、おまつりティーパーティーには終わりがありません。

After wandering the forest, Alice came upon the March Rabbit’s house. In front there was a “Matsuri Tea Party” going on. On top of a giant hat that was being used as a table, the teacup lanterns lit up dancing cotton candy, apricot desserts and shaved ice. The big clock is always stuck at 6 o’ clock tea time, so this party will never have an end.
