“TOKYO WANI DEPT STORE” MAKES WICKED HATS OF WICKER WHIMSY. EGGS AND HAM OR PANCAKE STACKS, ANYBODY?

籐でできためだま焼？籐でできたホットケーキ？籐でできたかわいい世界？「東京ワニ デパート」の手編みアクセサリーとオブジェはいろんな意味で”ひねてる”・・

Interrupting the USA trade show report to come back to Japan for a moment. I was going through some business cards from Tokyo’s ROOMS and came across one from a brand I freshly discovered at the show this month called “TOKYO WANI DEPT. STORE”. I was running through the Yoyogi stadium and only stopping for booths that seriously caught my eye. Well, this booth seriously put a fish hook through mine.

Was it the pancakes hat? Or the giant apple slice with a fork in it? Both. Both were awesome. And so much more! 

前回のブログの終わりで“次のブログもべガスリポートです”と言ったところですが、少々予定を変更して今回はある日本のブランドについてです！東京わにデパートと呼ばれるこのブランドは、今季ROOMSにも出展していたので知っている人もいるかもしれませんが、私の場合会場であるあの広大な代々木スタジアムの中で釣り竿にかかった魚のように引き寄せられてしまいました。

まず目についたのはパンケーキの形のハット、いやリンゴのスライスを象った作品だったか、とにかく全てのピースにこれでもかというくらいに興味津々。

Tokyo Wani Department Store’s signature is its pieces made out of wicker, and they are masters at manipulating it. But it’s not just the material that defines this unit’s flavor… you’ll see they stick to similar motifs, usually quirky things like food and candy or utensils. It’s very innocently fun, but the exaggerated size puts the observer off-balance and pushes it into the realm of the surreal. 

 カゴ素材を用いて作られる東京わにデパートの作品。高い技術をもって作られる作品たちは、多くがどこかで見たことのあるモチーフやちょっと変わった食べ物やお菓子をテーマに製作されている。童心に帰ったような無邪気なインスピレーションと、それをシュールに見せる超オーバーサイズなデザイン。この二つが揃って初めてこのブランドのスタイルが確立される。

Seeing things like this always brings me back to it: the Japanese can get away with so much stuff that the rest of the world may call “weird” with such innocence! Like, how brazilian girls always look great in a bikini no matter how ugly it is or how French people can always look cool even when smoking a cigarette. It shouldn’t work, but it DOES. This is Japan’s weapon. It’s WMD, if I may appeal.

こういったブランドを見るといつも思うのだが、他の国の人から見れば明らかにへんてこりんなこれらのものが、それと同時に類い稀なる純粋な好奇心という特性でこの国を特徴づけているということ。お国柄、というか、例えばブラジリアンはどんなビキニを着ても様になるのと同じ、もしくはフランス人ならタバコを吸う仕草さえも絵になるのと同じ。これでこそ日本人、と声高に叫びたくなる衝動に駆られてしまう。

So Tokyo Wani Dept started in 2009 by Keisuke Hosoka and Mio Umekita . Keisuke was constructing autamtons, old Japanese wind-up dolls, and Mio was an illustrator before they started Wani. Now they make accessories, hats, furniture and interior displays with their sense of wicker whimsy.  See more of their work below! Hopefully I will get my hands on a piece to photograph soon!

このブランドは、もともと日本の伝統的なネジ仕掛けの人形を作っていた穂坂 圭佑と、もともとイラストレーターとして活動していた梅北未央がデザイナーとして２００９年より活動している。これまでに発表してきた作品は、今回のようなハットの他にアクセサリー、家具、インテリアディスプレイなど、そのどれもが先の独特の世界観で繰り広げられて来た。ハットフリークの私としては見逃せないブランドリストNo.１の東京わにデパート。他にも過去の作品にはこんなのもあるのでご覧下さい。
