SITTING IN THE DEEP END WITH “THE DARKSIDE ISSUE”. MINTDESIGNS 2013 SS TOKYO.

ディープにダークな面を珍しく披露したミントデザインズ2013年春夏コレクション”ザ　ダークサイド　イシュー”

Mintdesigns pulled the proverbial rug out from under both their fans and critics by presenting a collection so totally out of character that no matter which camp you find yourself in, you had to sit up closer and pay attention.

Mintdesignsが発表した新作コレクション。先シーズンブランドとの大きな節目を迎えたこのブランドは、今回今までとはかなり趣の違う作品を打ち出し、ファンならずとも注意を払わずにはいられない、今シーズンのキーとなるショーだった。

Titled “The darkside issue”, it is a darker, more sinister, chicer, edgier look at the Mint aesthetic. One only needs to look at the palette of colors… all black and white save for a couple looks in red…to see where Mint was going with this. One thing that was totally new for Mint was the use of the same exact wigs for each model… and the fact that a lot were *western*. Mint had always been about using the personalities of each model-mostly Japanese-and especially their smiles and aloof expressions. “Charming”, “quirky”, “silly” is often how one might describe Mint in the past, afterall. 

“The darkside issue”と題されたこのコレクションは、よりダークで邪悪、そしてよりシックでエッジの効いたテイストで、カラーパレットもごく限られた赤などの色を除きほぼモノクロで展開された。加えてもう一つ大きな変化といえば、毎回Mintdesignsのショーといえばお決まりの、チャーミングに微笑みながらランウェイを歩くアジア人モデルも影をひそめ、全員目の隠れたウィッグを被り、さらにはモデルの多くは外国人が起用されていたこと。

But not this time. After all, was that a rabbit on a BB-gun practicing range from a carnival toy booth on those jacquard ensembles? What about the somewhat creepy print of the back of a young girl’s head and her braid?  

After the earthquake, I went and saw Mint designers at their exhibit and they admitted to me they had originally planned to do a dark collection for that season but shelved it when the earthquake hit. Perhaps it took another year and a half for the brand to get back on schedule? The designers said that they went dark because last season they celebrated their 10th anniversary and it was a good time to take the plunge. I like it at the deep end.

でも今回は、まだまだMintのウィットに富んだプリントも健在で、ウサギと射的の的を組み合わせたジャカードのアンサンブルに、三つ編みの女の子の後ろ姿のテキスタイルなど強烈に頭に残るものばかりだった。

実は昨年の震災の直後、ある取材でアトリエに伺わせて頂いた時に、次のコレクションはダークにしたいということを言っていたのだが、時勢を考慮して今回に持ち越したように見えた。実際、先シーズンのアニバーサリーを晴れやかに祝ったあとのこのコレクションはかなりのインパクトがある。そのことが功を奏し、素晴らしく高い技術を用いてメタリックのジャカードで制作されたアシンメトリーのパターンなどよりディテールにまで目を凝らして鑑賞することが出来た。この生地は一回に一着分ずつしか生産できないそうで、細部まで拘りぬかれた作品達は見応え十分。

And then that takes us to the end, with the chair print. I don’t know why, but this is one of the most brilliant prints I have seen…ever. It only makes it 1000 times better that it is incredibly high-quality and rare metallic jacquard being used for this assymmetrical pattern. Do to the complexity, you know they are not weaving out yards and yards of this fabric…no, it is being made for each piece. 

The shapes were fantastic as well…much more chic than ever before…perhaps a little tighter in the waist than previous? All I know is, I want 10 pieces. I find this collection to be historical for Mint and am so happy to have been a part of it.

それと同時に、シェイプに関しても素晴らしい変化が見られた。ウエストが少し絞られたこのシックなシルエットはまさに私の好みで、少なくとも１０着は欲しいピースをチェックしていた。１０周年を終え新たなストーリーを描くMintdesign。このショーを見られて、本当に良かったと思う。
