Get into the GVGV Groove. 見逃しちゃいけない、そんな夜だった。GVGV東京凱旋ショー2017aw

「昔は良かった」という表現。今、最前線で活躍している30代、40代の大人たちにとって、その”昔とは90年代のことだろう。日本では1991年にバブルが崩壊し経済はてんで元気がなかったが、そんな暗くなっていく世の中に対しての歯がゆさをぶつけるように、ロック、グランジ、ヒップホップなどのカウンターカルチャーが元気だった時代、それが90年代だ。
2017awコレクションで久しぶりに日本に帰ってきたG.V.G.V.のショーはそんな90年代を思わせる、パワフルでエネルギッシュなパフォーマンスだった。まるであの頃のクラブで、いきなり始まるゲリラショーや野外ゲリラパーティーのような、そんなワクワクする空間が恵比寿のLIQUIDROOMに広がった。

“The past was better”. To those in their 30s, that past is likely the 90s. In Japan in 1991 was when the economic bubble popped, and while things looked bleak, there were counter culture trends like grunge, hiphop, nu rock, and the Harajuku decora/goth/v-kei/lolita fashion scene which made that era rife with energy.
ワイドパンツやベルボトムパンツ、タイトドレス、オールインワン、フェイクファーコート… “キラキラ”ではなくもはや”ギラギラ”した洋服とモデルたちの表情。クラブでは誰もがみんな、自分が一番だと思っていたそんな時代が浮かび上がる。顎を上げ、腰をくねらせながら歩くモデルたちが印象的。絶えず登場するルックと熱気の波、生DJの音楽、ミラーボール…タイムスリップしたようなその世界に最後に仕上げをしたのは水原希子。挑発的な表情とダンス、ウォーキングに観客は思わず歓声をあげた。
そんな、素晴らしいショーだったから、個人的にはもう少しSNSで大きな話題になると期待していた。でもふたを開けると”代々木公園のタイフェスティバル”の記事は5倍ほどのビューアーが付いていた。どうしてだろうか？1999年に誕生したこのブランドは、時代の感性を敏感に読み取りカウンターカルチャーをテーマにコレクションを作ってきた。どんどんファンを増やし”向かうところ敵なし”みたいに勢いがあった頃のG.V.G.V.は、当時ファッションピープルなら誰でも知っていたと思う。
というのも、知名度をぐっと高めるきっかけになったユニクロとのコラボ。最後に日本で行ったショー(ディズニーキャラクターのスウェットとか、よくテレビでも芸能人が着用しているのを見かけた。)のクラシカルでありながらアンチテーゼを歌ったクールなコレクションもすごく評価が高かった。
Even though it was long awaited and welcomed, 4 years in Tokyo is perhaps long enough for the brand itself to be considered a bit nostalgic…I wondered, does the new generation even know GVGV well? 4 years ago Instagram had barely taken off in Japan, and the club crowd that made the brand big has gotten older and don’t club as much (oops, guilty). With that said, GVGV made sure to bring the sass and attitude up to 200% by hiring the coolest young it-girls including Kiko Mizuhara, the Gigi Hadid of Japan.
They wore the wide pants, the jumpsuits, the snake skin, leaopard skin, bright fur… it wasn’t the 90s up in here, it was the 90s vision of disco fever, with a splash of kawaii Harajuku thrown in for good measure. With former Phenomenon designer Osugi on the DJ deck, and the cool models on parade, I thought it would have broken the internet. But in fact, the number of page clicks for the show was much less than I expected (an article on the same fashion website about a thai food festival had considerably more views). What happened? Perhaps as I said above, 4 years is a gajillion year to the young generation here.
そのあと発表の場をパリにうつしたG.V.G.V。もしかしたら若い世代は、ニュースに関して完全に”受け身”なのかもしれない。タイムラインに流れてくる”知っている”文字列をタップして開く。”知らない”ワードはスルーする。おもしろいものを求め、新しいムーブメントに乗り、また次の新しいムーブメントに乗り換える、そんな昔の若者のような貪欲さは今の子達にはないのかもしれない。
でも、”クールなものをクールだと判断する”力はあると思う。膨大な情報と常に対峙する生活の中で、自然と見る目は養われているはず。だからこのコレクションをぜひ見て欲しい。ネットの情報社会に埋もれていいようなコレクションではなかった。元気をもらえるような素敵なショーだった。この素晴らしさを見逃すな！
Of course, another big problem facing not only GVGV but the industry at large is the proliferation of copies. I was in Harajuku this past weekend to shop and I felt that a lot of these sparkly fabrics and vintage style dresses were *already on the racks*. When most customers are middle class and buying for the name value, it seems amiss to design what is already trendy, instead of something beyond. But GVGV has *always* come out on top of the buzz game, and their clothes show up on every Japanese celebrity on every TV show so they’ve got that game locked down. Right after the show they took their collection to their showroom in Paris, perhaps where their disco -via-Tokyo-fever was hopefully better received.
