FINSK SHOES ARE UNLIKE ANYTHING YOU’VE SEEN POUNDING OUR EARTH’S PAVEMENT. THE “PROJECT” AND “SKIN” SERIES IN TOKYO?!
For the past decade, artistic shoes have been the call of the fashion pack (and then made known to the masses thanks to McQueen’s Armadillo shoe, then trickled down to the likes of fast-fashion shoe label Jeffrey Campbell… but I digress). It’s practically a uniform, and a beautiful heel may be the only thing considered a uniform in street style pics from all over the world still standing. ….except Tokyo. Truth be told, until recently it has been VERY difficult to get any kind of beautiful, individualistic shoes from any designer off the beaten path in this city. One of these reasons is local designers are so few I could count them on one hand… one hand missing a few fingers, even…ok, one hand missing three fingers (*cough*Noritaka Tatehana*Masaya Kushino*cough*).
I have mentioned the likes of Anastasia Radevich before, the Canadian shoe designer who is pushing boundaries (if you haven’t seen that yet, bookmark it!) but had no idea about any others on the scene. And then I got a beautiful little letter from a girl named Chiaki.
“I fell in love with FINSK shoes and knew I needed to work here. I am now interning at the atelier in London.”
Whoooo….passion! I liked her already. Chiaki lamented the lack of artistic, imagiative, and -wearable- shoes in Tokyo. Alas, FINSK still has a long way to go before it’s widely available in Japan. And it’s such a shame because the shoes were stunning!

SKIN by FINSK
I have the notched-out wedges and they, without a doubt, are the MOST comfortable pair of heels I have ever owned. Period. Nothing cuts into my foot, nothing scrapes layers of skin off. I wore these all throughout fashion week and wear them to go shopping and walking in all day in Tokyo.

And then later on something arrived on my doorstep.
Something…. a special delivery. I could tell when I shook the package there was something inside that had conviction. This was something special.
It was a pair of special “Project” shoes by FINSK designer Julia Lundsten, and they are thought-to-reality studies on footwear. You wouldn’t believe some of the shapes she manages to engineer:
そして開くと、そんな予想を遥かに上回る特別な“一足”が。
I had in my hands a pair of project 4 shoes, made couture just for me. I love these because while a trendy, bright color may have been more “me” as I am now, I want to wear these forever. So I have the polished wood heel pairs that remind me of artisan Japanese woodwork in black.
In fact, Julia is Finnish and was raised in a house with an architect father which is how she gets those shoes to perform their reality-defying stunts. The project shoes can get pretty expensive (uh, so can a Picasso) but the SKIN series is much more affordable. Ok, yeah, and maybe more realistic for my readers here (do I under or overestimate you guys? I never know).

Julia
And since it’s tough to find FINSK here in Japan, here’s a piece of amazing news: the brand is having a sample sale online NOW through Friday. Since the yen is high, you can get a pair for as little as 20,000 yen!!
Of course the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga are fans, but I love what Julia says here:
— Of course it is flattering when celebrities with a good sense of style choose to wear our shoes, but they are not our target audience. We are equally happy when other stylish women wear our shoes, says Lundsten to GNF.
I will try to live up to this!!!
