MASSIVE GLOBAL CREATIVE PROJECT “CANDYCOOL by FURLA” KICKS OFF IN TOKYO WITH ME! DESIGNING 2.5D CHAOS ON A CANDY BAG.
フルラの #CANDYCOOL 世界規模クリエイティブなプロジェクトの第一戦は東京で!そして、なんと私とコラボ!!「2.5次元」的なカオスな東京をあの人気キャンディーバッグで表現してみたら世が賑わいた?!

What IS creativity??? For me, it’s having one foot in the trends and one foot outside that box. It’s imagination, it’s surprise, and it makes you feel EMOTION. It can also be strange and draw criticism for being too avantgarde. All of this is creativity to me.
クリエイティビティとは何ぞや?

So when FURLA asked me to reach inside and be as creative as possible for a new project, it was kind of like “whoah” at first. Giving an artist a blank canvas can sometime cause them to go crazy without guidelines or inspiration. But this project, titled #candycool , is a global effort where one person from 12 countries is allowed to customize the popular Candy Bag along with a few local artists of their choosing. And Tokyo is the FIRST stop! So I was starting from a TOTAL clean slate (*die*). But luckily, I *DID* have guidelines, and I was to draw inspiration from Tokyo and its chaos. Emphasis on CHAOS. I finished the bag over 3 days while a pro video crew from Milan came during Tokyo Fashion Week to document the process and my life in Tokyo. The finished video is AMAZING and was immediately featured on Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair, Vogue Japan and more. After all the bags are done around the world, they will be presented during Milan fashion week next Feb in a huge party. Can’t wait to see how mine compares to the others!

I immediately came up with a theme of “2.5 Dimension Tokyo” and called upon 3 incredibly talented artists to help me customize the bag. Nagisa Tsushima of Disco Nails for Harajuku nail art, Nishijin-ori for some super traditional uber luxe kimono fabric and Ms. Hirota at Rotari Parker for her “candy” accessories. Sayumi Gunji, creative director of VOGUE girl was the one who consulted on the project, and in her office during our initial meeting I grabbed a paper and sketched out exactly what I wanted right away. Nail art! Candy! Tradition-cum-pop accents! I am so proud of the bag!

The braids are twisted into a decoration called “mizuhiki” which is found on celebratory envelopes in Japan. I made it out of Plumb wig hair.

“gross-Kawaii” nail art tips by DISCO (Nagisa Tsushima)。And finally, this beautiful kimono fabric in a harlequin print that looks totally modern but is hundreds of years old.

The bag was revealed at a Candy Bag x VOGUE girl event at the Furla GINZA store and I gave a talk show about creativity to VOGUE girl readers. Actually, this was a bigger event, and joining me was everyone’s favorite cool DJ & designer, Peli and blogger Rie Hayashi who also customized their own Candy Bags. We initially appeared together in VOGUE girl and this day was the big reveal. For this event, I made *another* customized candy bag too, this time just by myself. I called it “Candy Baroque”. It features baroque and graphical cut-out PVC designs with some pastel gemstones and glitter. It had such a great reception on Twitter and Instagram, I think it should get manufactured, don’t you think? *wink*

The movie kinda has a surreal Lynch-ian mood to it…it helps I look like a character out of Twin Peaks or something. heh
あたしのツインピークスっぽいシュールな格好に、ショートフィルムのムードからして、ちょっとデイビッドリンチって感じがしてしょうがない。あくまで自分の意見だけど 笑(リンチ大好き!)
There is still a year left in the #candycool project so I’m going to be keeping up with it!
